Canon 1DX iii First Impressions

First Impressions of the Canon 1DX Mark 3 announced this week at CES 2020 from Canon.

Canon 1DX Mark 3 For Video, what we’ve found out from CES.

Stunning 4k features, but lacking IBIS & AF without a crop.

And truly, that’s it in a nutshell. Despite being the latest flagship DSLR, aimed squarely at pro/sports photographers the Canon 1DX iii does feature some incredible video specs that arguable will put it right up there with some of the the premium video hybrids we saw at the end of 2019, like the Panasonic S1H.

4K 60fps will get filmmakers excited, especially considering that is using the full frame. The new Digic X processor certainly packs a punch. The Canon 1DX Mark 3 also allows for 10bit 4:2:2 RAW, using the full Canon C-Log profile. So it’s also going to have fantastic colour reproduction, dynamics for the more pro user who’s happy to grade & correct.

Where we start to see it’s flaws is in the small detail. And in reality these issues are purely down to processing limitations. You also have to bear in mind that this isn’t a video-first release from Canon, it is a photographers camera that happens to pack in some incredible video features. However the lack of IBIS, in place of Electronic stabilisation is going to a let down for video shooters.

More importantly is the lack of the dual pixel autofocus when in 4k/60 or Raw video modes. There’s reports that this feature is available if the frame is cropped, but thats’ yet to be seen.

All in all it does seem like this isn’t truly for filmmakers, and that shouldn’t be a surprise. However for those photographers looking for a top end hybrid that can shoot incredible video, this will certainly deliver. But with a price tag of $6,500 and the fact that Canon have also announced there focus away from the EF mount in favour of the RF lens system, you will have to ask if it represents value or if you’d be better served with something like the Panasonic S1H.
