Canon G5X ii (mark 2) Full Review & Test Footage

Canon G5X ii (mark 2) Full Review, with 4K & Slow Motion 120fps Test Footage. Is the g5x ii the best hybrid compact camera in 2019?

The best hybrid compact camera of 2019?

Canon’s compact cameras have long been widely popular with content creators, especially those creating videos for YouTube. However they have, at times been lacking on the feature front, often looking like photo cameras that just happen to shoot video. But with the release of the G5x Mark 2 it seems Canon are looking to buck that trend and truly embrace the casual video creator within their compact camera range.

Featuring a slimmed down design from it’s older brother, canon have managed to make this compact truly pocket friendly, weighing only 340grams with a battery & by hidding the viewfinder inside the body.

It has the same 1inch CMOS sensor, but with making use of the DIGIC 8 Processor it can now record video at 4K without any crop. It can also capture video at 120 fps in 1080 & can create 4k time lapses within the camera itself. There’s the 5x zoom 24mm lens, that has a max aperture of f/1.8  –  and also for video shooters a whole host of features, from built in image stabilisation, ND filters, Front Facing Touchscreen, Vertical Video, Focus Peaking, Clean HMDI out & a whole lot more.

It seems on paper, that Canon have decided to cram in all the video features any casual content creator could want, whilst keeping the great photo qualities of the original version, But with that, lets jump in and look at the good bits of the Canon Powershot G5x Mark 2.

Canon G5X Mark 2 – The Good Bits

Image quality – it was a rare thing for compact cameras to have decent quality, but we’re now starting to see some really great quality cameras in the market, from both Sony & Canon. And I would definitely count the G5xii within that. It’s 4k video is beautiful in it’s detail and colours are nice straight out of the camera. That’s really important, as the typical user of this camera isn’t going to be colour correcting or grading their footage. The quality of the image from this camera allows for a fantastic looking video, without any heavy lifting in post, exactly what the casual creator needs.

Functionality, is incredible. Canon have crammed so much into this camera it’s hard to truly do it justice in this video. But it seems everything any casual photo or video creator would want is here and all seemingly without cutting corners anywhere. In fact it’s so good, at so much, I’d happily use them for our own videos, especially when we’re on the road. It’s type of device that’s easy to use, well built and offers you as a content creator everything you need, from 4k to photos to streaming vertical video. But with all that said, lets take a look at the bad bits of the G5x Mark 2.

G5Xii The Bad Bits

Ok, in truth is absolutely a hard task to be critical of a camera like this. Obviously I’m not comparing this to any higher end DSLR’s or Cinema Range cameras, but in it’s own right this compact stands above most cameras coming out in 2019.

It is pricey, that’s for sure, coming in at around £850 but when compared to it’s new competitor from Sony, that still represents a saving. The price is only really an issue when compared to the Canon G7x Mark 3, which offers almost all of the same features for less. But in truth these cameras are aimed at slightly different users. So that initially high price point, does fade into what seems like a good deal when you weigh up everything you’re getting for your money.

For any content creators out there, that are looking for the perfect compact for both photo & video, then the Canon Powershot G5x ii may well just be it. It’s quite unbelievable everything Canon have crammed into a compact body, without seemingly compromising on quality anywhere. So for the casual creator, this compact represents a fantastic addition or upgrade to your kitbag.
