Canon G7x iii & G5x ii – Which compact camera should you upgrade to?
August 2019 see’s canon release 2 upgrades to their compact camera range, the Canon G7x Mark 3 & Canon G5x mark ii. With almost identical form factors and price points, I wanted to take a closer look at these two compacts and see which you should go for this year.
The main upgrades these two cameras have seen come in the video front. It seems Canon are now taking the YouTube video creator seriously by providing them almost every feature they could ever hope, within a compact body. And in truth, they are identical on that video front with both cameras offering: 4k Video without crop, 120 fps at 1080, front facing articulating touchscreen, wifi connectivity & live streaming, vertical video, built in 4k time-lapse, ND filters, image stabilisation, focus peaking and much, much more!
So apart from price point, what separates these two compacts – well it’s certainly not their form factors; as they look, weigh & handle in almost exactly the same way. But that’s no bad thing as they feel great in hand, you could say premium, they are clearly well built & ergonomic – making use of simple control & canon’s lovely menu systems.
Both represent awesome upgrades to Canon’s compact range with huge step ups in their video capabilities. If you’re looking to upgrade from an older compact or even from capturing content on your mobile device, these represent great options that beat their competitors on price.
So Which Should You Pick?
Well in reality that depends on what you hope to achieve with the cameras. If you’re looking as a video ONLY shooter then I’d go with the Canon G7x iii – it offers all the upgrades in functionality & quality but at a slightly lower price point. You also get the added flexibility of that external microphone input, which is a fantastic addition for video.
If you’re looking for a hybrid compact, for both video & photo. Then the Canon G5x Mark ii is for you. The pop Electronic viewfinder will be a great addition for photo’s – as will the added flexibility of the longer (5x) zoom range on the integral lens.
With all that said, both cameras won’t disappoint & truly represent great value and a welcome, huge upgrade in their video capabilities, without compromising the already great photo quality their predecessors had.
