Canon G7x Mark iii Full Review and Test Footage

The Canon G7X Mark iii Review, with 4k & 120fps test footage. Is this new compact camera Canon’s best ever vlog camera for beginners?

Canon G7x Mark 3 – Is This Canon’s Best Ever Vlog Camera?

The latest compact camera from Canon, is widely seen as their first serious play at the casual youtube creator. On face value it looks identical to it’s predecessor the G7X Mark 2 – but when you spend a little time with it, there’s been some huge upgrades for video creators.

It has a 1inch CMOS sensor that can shoot 4k without any crop, it can also shoot 1080 at up to 120 fps, for your Peter McKinnon Style Broll. The integral 24mm zoom lens has a variable aperture of F/1.8-2.8.

But the video features don’t stop there, you have an external mic input, articulating front facing touchscreen, builtin in ND filtering, wifi & bluetooth connectivity with the ability to stream Live to YouTube and the built in capabilities to capture vertical video. You also have focus peaking, built in image stabilisation, a clean HDMI output as well as decent auto focus – all in a pocket friendly camera.

So on Paper it’s a device aimed squarely at content creators, but lets dive beyond the specs and take a look at the good bits of G7x Mark 3.

The Good

Image Quality… honestly, this really impressed me. I’m well used to being slightly under-whelmed with small bodied cameras and their noisy, over sharpened images. But the Canon G7x Mark iii really bucks that trend. The image quality for both the 4k video and images is pretty impressive. This would definitely show a big step up for the average youtube creator, who’s using a cheaper compact or even their phones to capture video currently & lets be honest, that is exactly who Canon are aiming this camera at.

Video features – Canon get a lot of bad rep amongst the online community for missing out certain video features from their newer cameras, as they often look to protect their pro-cinema camera range. But again the G7x iii seems to buck this trend. Canon have crammed in just about every feature any type of content creator could want & into an extremely well built, palm sized body. There’s so much, in such a great form that I would without hesitation have one or two of these cameras with us at all times for capturing content on the go.

The 4k is detailed, the 120fps smooth, the colours are pleasing & the internal audio isn’t half bad either. In fact the Canon G7x Mark 3 is hard to criticise as it really does represent almost the perfect run n gun, vloggers camera. But with that said, lets take a look at the bad bits of this compact camera.

The Bad Bits

It’s pricey, coming it around £700, it’s defitnieley aimed at the creator wanting to take things seriously. But when you consider everything they’ve crammed in for the video creator, alongside the awesome photo capabilities, that actually represents great value.

My only other real issue with this compact, is the fact that Canon neglected to put some kind of cold shoe mount on the body. Ordinarily with compacts, this isn’t even a consideration, but the fact that the 3.5mm mic input is there, makes the lack of a cold shoe mount seem glaring. Obviously this isn’t a deal breaker, but certainly a consideration.

From a content creators perspective, Canon have really smashed the ball out of the park with this compact. It represents an almost no brainer of an upgrade for any YouTube creators that are looking for a big step up in quality, without too hefty a price tag. Sure, it more expensive than some compacts on the market, but non of those cram in so much into such a convenient form factor.

  1. Wish I could afford it, looks a great evolution. In other news as one of your podcast Listeners (sorry not a viewer) – I'm up to episode 23. I have been listening to podcasts since forever and honestly I find Shark Tank to be right up there. Just heard the shocking news that Pete sits down in the shower. Does the man have no shame?
