With moving to a new studio I have been able to flex the business card a little on some of the essentials for the new sets. I plan on building every set with equipment that stays set up ready to film. Just drop a battery and card in the camera and start. With that in mind I bought a beast of a lightweight tripod for £60. So here’s my justification for that purchase… I mean “review.”
Lightweight tripods are perfect for run and gun filming and today we are spoilt for choice with online offerings from so many brands. I know K&F Concept products so that made it easier for me to shop around. The package you get from K&F fits in to a small well padded bag, It has small padded handles or a shoulder strap.
Inside the carry case you find the tripod folded in to just under 19 inches. The legs articulate all the way over and clip in to position. There is a ratchet design that allows the legs to go through three locking stages of various degrees, depending how splayed you want the legs.
Once the legs are folded over you find the centre column of the tripod can be lowered giving you a tripod that looks rather traditional. The Ball head has the ability to rotate with an adjustable tensioner for resistance and to lock it off. The ball head is easy to adjust to fix on your subject, you can also use it for vertical video. To the side of the mounting plate there is a precision level and the mounting plate has a standard 1/4″ Inch Thread.
Formed from Aluminium the entire tripod is light but robust. You can remove one leg entirely which cleverly doubles up as a monopod, simply unscrew the head from the tripod and you have an even lighter set up should that suit.
But is it worth £60? Well let’s look at the good bits.
When you are out filming or taking photos you want your gear to be light and robust. This travel tripod is light enough to take with you, and its compact form takes seconds to assemble which makes it convenient. As for being robust well The max load is 8 Kilos which is going to cover more than enough headroom to the weightiest of set ups. In the real world that 8kg max load is to help make this tripod more stable so it doesn’t topple in the wind.
You will find a hook on the centre column which can take a weighted bag and that really does make all the difference to stability if you want to get a sharp long exposure outdoors. The minimum and maximum size of this tripod has to be its most worthy appeal. From 17” when packed to travel to 54 inches when fully extended for use. this is perfect for a standing shot of Aj.
The height adjustments are made by quick release levers, they are made from a thick plastic and the points where they could fail “around the hinge” looks pretty chunky too. Finally the head is not perfect for panning shots but it is totally detachable and if you have a head with a lever you can easily switch it out. Which brings me on to whats not to like.
Ok the height of this tripod.. So for me this is part of a studio set for filming talking head shots sat down. In that situation its a thumbs up.. No issue. However if you were taking some standing shots then the subject cant be taller than five food as the tripod only reaches 4 foot 5. Which is roughly the height of Aj.
Thats pretty much it. I like everything about this tripod, It has a well padded bag. It’s light, compact and robust. It only costs £60 quid. It’s pretty funky with the orange accents and if you are too tight to buy a monopod well you get one by dismantling this tripod. Thats winning. So if you like winning and you’re in the market for a travel friendly tripod I’ve dropped a link below.
