Panasonic Lumix GH6 Announced – Specs & Preview

TL:DR – This is going to be well worth the wait for existing GH5 users.

Panasonic have finally announced the long awaited full model update to the ever popular, video first hybrid the GH5 with the Panasonic Lumix GH6. This announcement comes on the same day as the launch of the Lumix GH5 ii, which see’s marginal bumps in performance from the GH5 and will no doubt entice new users in the the Lumix M4/3 ecosystem.

With that in mind Panasonic have confirmed that the GH6 will be landing ‘early next year’, but without a firm 2022 date yet set. We have yet seen any official images of, or from this camera, but that in’t unusual for manufactures at this stage. What is a break from the norm is for Panasonic to confirm the replacement model to camera on the day of its (GH5 ii) launch. This is clearly to suppress any disappointment from the existing GH5 community, who’ve been waiting for the GH6 to land.

I will say though after seeing the GH5 ii in action, this is an incredible and worthy camera in its own right, and if that is anything to go by, the GH6 will 100% be worth the wait when it does land and will undoubtedly be the upgrade the GH5 filmmaking community are hoping for.

Here’s what we know, as confirmed by Panasonic today, about the GH6:

  • 4.2.2 10Bit 4K 60p Internally
  • 10bit 5.7K Max resolution
  • Cinema 4K 60p
  • 4K 120p

After using, reviewing and loving the GH5ii this week, I for one am very excited by the GH6 and am looking forward to getting hands on with this, closer to launch. If you want to hear more we talk about this in more detail in the Camera News podcast.
