The Panasonic S1H is a seemingly perfect piece of filmmaking engineering, bringing high end, Netflix approved performance into the hybrid, handheld form factor. A product so much better than everything else right now that it seems impossible to improve upon it.
That was true, until Panasonic teamed up with Atomos…
It’s seems almost unfair, to the rest of the camera world, to make something that is so good, so much better, but that’s exactly what the 2.0 firmware from Panasonic does. This firmware update, which is slated for release on May 25th isn’t a minor bug fix, or feature bump. This is a major performance upgrade & best of all, it’s free!!
There are of course some bug fixes and compatibility upgrades, but the main improvement, the one that gets us most excited is that the V2 firmware now allows you to record Full 5.9K Raw over HDMI to the Atomos Ninja V.
Let that sink in. Full 5.9k Raw up to 30p or Raw 4K 60p, over HDMI… that’s not just mind blowing, it’s a game changer.
By far the biggest drawback of the S1H was the need to rely solely on UHS2 SD cards. As a medium, thats not going to cut for longer productions and this firmware update, in collaboration with Atomos removes that issue entirely.
There’s something beautiful that happens when great companies collaborate and this is clearly an example of that. It would nice to think that the other camera manufactures may look to the same kind of collaborative working going forward. But until then, I can use the S1H, seemingly without the limitations of small recording media, capturing the full beauty of a 5.9K Raw image, with all the post production versatility of the Pro-Res codec and that further cements my love for the Panasonic Lumix S1H.
